What Size Chandelier for a Dining Room?

What size chandelier for a dining room? Add the room’s length and width in feet — the total in inches is the right chandelier diameter. A 12×14 ft dining room needs roughly a 26-inch chandelier. Choosing the right chandelier for a dining room comes down to two measurements: diameter and hang height. The L+W formula gives you the diameter in seconds; the calculator above handles both.

Quick answer: Add the room’s length and width in feet — the total is the ideal chandelier diameter in inches. A 12×14 ft dining room needs a chandelier roughly 26 inches in diameter (12 + 14 = 26). For ceiling height, hang it so the bottom sits 30–36 inches above the table in a dining room, or at least 7 ft above the floor in other rooms.

The two formulas every designer uses

L + W = diameter
Diameter rule (inches)
Add room length and width in feet. The total in inches is the ideal chandelier diameter. 12 ft + 14 ft = 26″ chandelier.
H × 2.5–3
Height rule (inches)
Multiply ceiling height in feet by 2.5 to 3. That’s the ideal chandelier height (top to bottom). 9 ft × 3 = 27″ tall fixture.
30–36″
Above dining table
Bottom of chandelier should hang 30–36 inches above the table surface. Lower for cozier rooms, higher for bright open dining.
7 ft min
Clearance in walkways
In hallways, entryways, and living rooms without furniture below, leave at least 7 feet of clearance from floor to bottom of fixture.

Dining room chandeliers — the most common question

The dining room is where chandelier sizing matters most. Too small and it looks like a bare bulb floating over your table. Too large and it dominates the room and blocks sightlines across the table.

Width rule for dining tables: The chandelier should be roughly half the width of the dining table — and never wider than the table itself. A 42-inch wide table suits a chandelier 18–24 inches in diameter.

Rectangular tables: For long rectangular dining tables, consider two smaller pendants hung in a row instead of one large chandelier. Each pendant should be about one-third the table length, hung over the outer thirds of the table.

How high to hang a chandelier

Getting the hang height right is just as important as the diameter. Too high and it looks disconnected; too low and people lean around it at dinner.

Chandelier size for high ceilings

Standard sizing formulas assume an 8-foot ceiling. For every additional foot of ceiling height, add 3 inches to the hang height and scale up the fixture size accordingly.

Two-storey foyer rule: The chandelier should fill roughly one-third of the vertical height of the foyer. In a 20 ft two-storey entry, the chandelier should be 6–8 ft tall from top to bottom — far taller than a standard fixture.

Common chandelier sizing mistakes

Going too small. This is by far the most common mistake. When in doubt, go one size up — a chandelier that feels slightly large in the store will look exactly right once it’s up in the room.

Hanging too high. A chandelier hung at 7 feet above the floor in a dining room looks disconnected from the table. Get it down to 30–34 inches above the table surface.

Forgetting the chain length. When you order a chandelier, check the maximum chain or cord length. You’ll need enough chain to hang it at the correct height from a ceiling that may be 9 or 10 feet up.

Not centring it on the table. The chandelier should centre on the dining table, not on the ceiling. If the table is offset from the room centre, move the junction box — don’t hang the chandelier off-centre.

Frequently asked questions

What size chandelier for a 10×12 dining room?
Using the L+W formula: 10 + 12 = 22 inches. A 20–24 inch diameter chandelier is ideal for this room. Hang it 30–34 inches above the dining table.
What size chandelier for a 12×12 dining room?
12 + 12 = 24 inches. A 22–26 inch chandelier works well. If your ceiling is higher than 8 feet, go toward the top of that range or consider a 28-inch fixture.
Can a chandelier be too big for a room?
Yes — a chandelier that’s too wide will dominate the room visually and block sightlines across a dining table. Keep the diameter under the L+W formula result and never wider than the table below it.
How many lumens should a dining room chandelier have?
Aim for 3,000–5,000 lumens for a standard dining room chandelier. Install a dimmer — dining lighting works best around 50–70% brightness during meals. Use our Room Lumens Calculator to find the precise target for your room size.
What colour temperature (CCT) for a dining room chandelier?
2700K–3000K (warm white) is the standard for dining rooms. It flatters food, skin tones, and creates a warm, inviting atmosphere. Avoid anything above 3500K in a dining setting — it looks clinical and unflattering.
Do I need an electrician to install a chandelier?
If you’re replacing an existing ceiling light, most homeowners can do it safely themselves. If you’re adding a new junction box or moving an existing one, you’ll need a licensed electrician. Always turn off the circuit breaker before touching wiring.
